Construction of New Toilet Blocks at Schools

April 5th, 2010

Construction of New Toilet Blocks - Matching Grants Project - Yuwak Sangh School Sada GoaWe have completed the construction of Toilet Blocks at 2 of our partner schools in Goa. The toilet blocks were inaugurated by AG Rtn. Shankar Kirlaparkar on behalf of the District Governor Rtn. Gurudatta D. Bhakta. Also present were the School Management, and Rotarians from the Vasco da gama and Dabolim clubs.

Our club has helped in the Planning and Construction of Toilet Blocks, while the Schools have ensured availability of location and necessary permissions, and will ensure that the toilets are maintained properly.

girls-toilet-construction-of-new-toilet-blocks-matching-grants-project-yuwak-sangh-school-sada-goaAt Yuwak Sangh School, Sada, Goa, the Toilet Blocks project will benefit 229 people – 119 boys, 90 girls and 20 teaching and non-teaching staff members. Before we started implementing the project, the school had a run-down toilet that was not being used. Since the students did not have proper toilet facilities, this forced some of the students to use the open areas adjoining the school or go back to their homes. This also impacted the drop-out ratio among girls. By providing the toilet blocks, the children including girls will have the privacy and the hygiene of proper toilets. Most schools serving the underprivileged have a higher Girl Child drop out rate. This is also evident in the accompanying data shown below that we measured in one of our partner schools. We aim to improve this metric by our project.

anjuman-1At Anjuman H. I. High School, Baina, Goa – we have built 3 new toilets to add to the existing 8 toilets, and the project will benefit 1348 people – 781 boys, 519 girls and 40 staff.

This is a part of our School Project, where we plan to Improve the Infrastructure of schools. Other focus areas of our School Project include Improving the quality of Teachers and Purchase of Teaching Aids.

Our overall objective is to Improve the education imparted to children, Improve employability of the children who graduate, Focus on children from lesser privileged sections of society.

Toilets have been provided under Matching Grants Programme (MG # 71359) of The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International with Rotary Club of Vasco da gama, District 3170, India (our sponsoring club) and Rotary Club of West Hampton as the host and Primary International partners. Thanks also to Rotary Club of Southold and Easthampton Rotary Club, District 7260, USA, and, and numerous donors who have shown their trust in our activities and generously supported us.
